An aromatic seed that can be used as a cooking spice. It has a sweet yet licorice-like flavor.

The plant traveled throughout the Mediterranean region and Asia Minor and became established in Greece by the 4th century BCE.

Confectioners in Mexico used toasted anise as their signature flavor in wedding cookies.
