Originated in the Mediterranean region or southwestern Asia. The earliest existing remains of these beans are from the Neolithic period in Israel between 6800 and 6500 BCE.
Around 3000 BCE, the fava bean spread to China, likely through trade with merchants in the Middle East.
Fava beans are good sources of potassium, magnesium, copper, zinc, and folate.
