An acidic goat, buffalo, or cow’s milk. Kefir is similar in flavor to yogurt—tart and slightly sour.
Originated from Russia, North Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
Kefir appears to have spread to Japan, the U.S., and throughout Europe during the 21st century.
Kefir is believed to have some health benefits, including beneficial effects on the immune system and gut health, though more research is required to determine why and to what extent.
