South America. Wild potatoes were found in southern Chile dating back to at least 5000 BCE.
The Spanish brought potatoes to Europe in the 1550s.
Potatoes are one of the most important crops in the world. It was central to diets in Ireland; in 1845 the Irish potato crop became diseased, leading to a famine and increased Irish immigration to the United States.
