Family Story

Skinnamarinky dinky dink, Skinnamarinky doo, …. We love Lois’ brownies !! Lois Lilienstein, of the renowned children’s entertainers, Sharon, Lois & Bram, loved to cook and was famous for her brownies. Whether singing about her brownies or experimenting with new ingredients in them … she was always sharing her brownies! Lois used a recipe from her aunt Esther Stiffel of Chicago. Aunt Esther loved brownies, and so the tradition began. In many of their concert tours, on both of their critically-acclaimed tv series' ("Sharon, Lois & Bram's Elephant Show" on CBC/Nickelodeon and "Skinnamarink TV" CBC/The Learning Channel), as well as during their holiday special, "Candles, Snow & Mistletoe" on Broadway; Sharon, Lois & Bram often sang about Lois' brownies. It became so famous; it was even included in the insert of the trio's holiday album of the same name. The great tasting memories of Lois’ brownies continue today. Lois’ cousin Stacy Paddack of Tallahassee Florida, says that Lois often said “Food is Love!”, and that Lois’ heart and soul sweetened every batch of brownies. “At the end of her life, I baked brownies in her kitchen every day for weeks so she could smell and taste “the love.” Sharon, Lois & Bram shared their love of music and their love of food with each other. In thinking about the brownies, Bram remembers that Lois said, “I put whipped cream over the brownies to cut the sweetness!” Sharon continues to cook recipes that Lois often prepared. “Lois was a great cook and baker and loved to share her recipes. I have many of them filled with notes from her as she worked on them. Using them makes me feel like we’re doing them together.” Sharon’s daughter Randi often made Lois’ brownies. When she checked the recipe with Lois, she delighted in getting a new optional ingredient each time, like cocoa, espresso and Rolos. Years ago, she also enjoyed watching Lois’ son David making Lois’ brownies in his tiny San Francisco apartment. And yes, David still makes his mom’s brownies today. He is sharing Lois’ love of cooking and eating great food, with his daughter Tessa. David’s memory of Lois adding the mini marshmallows & Rolos to the brownies, is still how he makes the recipe. He says he was trained well! There was a sold-out memorial concert for Lois at Jane Mallett Theatre, / St Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto in 2015, where the audience was filled with family, friends and fans. It was a wonderful celebration of music & stories, smiles & laughs. It was very fitting, that as everyone left the memorial concert, they were all given one of Lois’ brownies, because that is how Lois showed her love for others.
