Family Story

My mother was brought up in a family that had a cook, so she never really learned how to cook. When she married my dad (according to her mother, she married down), his mother--my grandmother--taught her how to cook. My grandmother had been brought up on a farm in Chatham County in the middle of North Carolina. She was the oldest of six children and graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1919. She vowed to marry a college man and did! He was from Oxford, Mississippi and had attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) majoring in civil engineering. He was living in NC working for the highway department building bridges. I'm pretty sure that it was his mother who taught my grandmother how to make this cornbread. And she taught it to my mother who then taught it to me.
